Also organisers announced local bank “Sparkasse Duisburg” as first main sponsor. The chairman of the bank described participation of his company as a contribution to enhance and verifyDuisburg’s first class reputation as a city of sports. “Duisburghas invested in the development of the regatta course in previous years. This will be the first time we can present the completed parallel channel”, said Hans-Werner Tomalak. The City stepped in forRio de Janeiro, who handed their commitment for the Championships 2013 back to the ICF.

Local organisers of the regatta will be Kanu-Regatta-Club Duisburg led by their President, Otto Schulte. This will be the fifth time the club will be responsible for this major event following 1979, 1987, 1995 and 2007. Otto Schulte: “ We are experienced enough to organise such a large event with short notice to suit all athletes.” Otto Schulte anticipates approx. 80 nations to participate in the title races in the year after the Olympics.

Finding the right dates has take a few weeks as all German television stations had to be consulted with regards to live coverage of the event, Thomas Konietzko explained on Monday. One of the challenges with the short notice of taking over the event is setting up a budget. “Therefore it is very imported to us that Sparkasse Duisburg did not hesitate to agree their support. We can feel the tail wind as city and region are ready for next years event”, said Thomas Konietzko. Chairman of the board, Hans-Werner Tomalak, stated: “ World Championships will be a real highlight for all citizens.
